Hi folks, I'm an amateur mason. At least I guess I am. When my wife and I had to break up the cementitious floor of our (2nd floor!) bathroom, we decided to tackle the reinstall and tiling ourselves. We did a ton of research and agonizing, but in the end, we got a good product. (see bad photos) We used Sakreet Sand Mix, which I mixed by hand and carried upstairs to her for 11hrs straight while she packed and smoothed it. (She's badass, and has already found she has a knack for spackling.) The bathroom floor project destroyed us, and we basically swore off ever doing masonry again, with the exception of our shower pan, which is only a 3x3' space. We're now in the middle of that, and I have a Q for y'all. But I'm gonna post that elsewhere on the forum. First,
I wanted to follow protocol and do the registry post.

I'm just now seeing your introduction post and the photos from earlier this summer. Welcome to the forum to you and your wife! Thanks for sharing the pictures. That octagonal tile floor looks great and you both did a really nice job installing it. I see you've opened up the wall for the new shower. It must've taken a lot of effort to remove the old floor and put in the new one so neatly. After all that work, building the shower pan will be a big step forward. Are you planning to use a traditional mud bed or one of the newer foam systems for the pan?
