slope vs rebuild after wall failure

Had a 4-ft retaining wall fail because it wasn't built with drainage, stone base, or geogrid. The yard slopes up behind it, so there's a lot of soil pressure. Rebuilding properly with geo and drain tile is the textbook fix, but I'm wondering about alternatives.

Could I just cut the slope back, add soil, and let it run down instead of replacing the wall? Plan would be to add topsoil, seed it, and put drains at the top and bottom to move water away. The big concern is whether that much soil would stay put long term without creeping toward the house. Anyone here ever turned a retaining wall failure into a slope instead of rebuilding? Did it actually hold up in the real world?
 
Yeah man, you can cut it back into a slope if you've got space, just remember soil creeps over time and rain makes it worse
 
If you have enough space, a gentle slope (3:1 or less) is usually a better fix than rebuilding a failed wall.

Sorry, but I strongly recommend against this. A 4-foot wall is holding back a significant amount of soil and water pressure. If you just cut the slope back and add topsoil, the sheer weight of it will lead to slump and creep toward the house over time, especially with freeze/thaw cycles and heavy rain. Drain tile helps with surface water, but it won't solve the core problem of soil instability. You'd be trading a failed wall for an even bigger mess. Rebuilding the wall with proper drainage, like a good crushed stone base and a drain tile, and a geogrid is the right fix and the only way to ensure the long-term stability of the slope and protect your home! It's more work and more expensive upfront, but it's the only way to do it once and have it last. Anything else is just kicking the can down the road and setting yourself up for a bigger mess later.

You're on the right track with your concerns about soil creep, but while it's tempting to look for a cheaper way out, that amount of soil isn't going to stay put long-term on a slope, even with good surface drains..

I'm with @TheStoneBuilder that it's not just about surface water. You've got a massive amount of lateral pressure from the soil itself, especially when it gets saturated. Without a proper retaining structure, that pressure will eventually push the soil downhill, and it will keep moving. You'd be setting yourself up for a constant battle with soil creep, which will likely undermine the foundation of your house and a few other things. It's just smarter and safer to rebuild the wall with proper drainage and reinforcement. It's the only way to genuinely fix the problem and give yourself peace of mind. Cutting corners here will cost you a lot more in the long run.
 
Yep, you can try to regrade it into a slope, but unless you flatten it a lot, it’ll fight gravity hard. Without reinforcement or proper drainage, it’ll eventually creep or slip. If you go slope, make sure your drains are rock-solid, terraces or benches help, and be ready to rebuild if it moves.
