Since this is a very sm job, all contractors have declined the wk. Therefore, I'm going to do this myself.
Seeking your help to determine if my approach is correct. I've provided some pics for you. The first pic is where the stones sound hollow, then next ones are the broken stones and the later that butt up to the spa water line 6x6" stones. They are all the same color and texture. The lighting makes them look different.
This is for the spa coping where 2 pieces have cracked and 8-10 have come loose. If you tap on the loose ones, it sounds hollow. I was able to pull up one of the broken ones to take to stone store to match. I was able to lay it back down as is.
The stones come 12"x24" at $40/stone, so I'm cutting them both length and width. One stone requires a 45 cut.
I was going to use my grinder to first remove the grout btw all the stones on the top. I can lift 4-5 of them rt now if i pull hard. Once i have all the stones (2 broken & 8-10 whole lose ones) removed, i can simply take the two broken ones (put back together) and trace the edges onto two new stones for cutting. Then grind off the thinset from the bottoms of the whole ones, and all the grout in between. When i pulled one of the broken ones, there wasn't what i consider a lot of thinset.
With the stones that butt up to the 6"x6" water line stones, I am thinking that i need to remove this grout too, correct?
To conclude, I'll rent a wet saw to make all the cuts. Once I've removed all the stones (broken & whole) I'll then know if i need to buy anymore stones
than the two broken ones. I'll match the grout color and go w the mortar you buy in a bucket as needed.
