My outdoor stairs were built about 10 years ago but the foundation underneath them was already failing so the whole structure has completely collapsed now. Unfortunately, we left neglected. I know I have to start by completely removing the old, broken foundation and then I need to figure out the best way to rebuild the steps to support my individual stone slabs.
I have heard that the form and pour method is excellent for foundations and stairs but I am not sure if that technique can be used when you plan to lay stone or brick on top of it. What is the most durable and easiest method for building a new, solid base for stairs that have a stone slab finish?
Should I build a basic concrete foundation using forms first and then mortar the stone slabs onto that or is there a way to form and pour the steps that directly incorporates the bricks or stone as the finishing layer?
