I'm trying to help my girlfriend's parents with their garage, and we've run into a weird problem. There’s a cinder block skirt around the bottom of all the walls that aren't shared with the house.
It's super inconvenient, you can't put anything flush against the wall.
Does anyone know why they would build a garage like this? The walls are just 2×4’s and the outside already has a brick skirt, so I assume the interior block is just there to back up the exterior brick layer. It's definitely not load bearing.
Given it's just a non load bearing nuisance, do you think it's safe to take this block skirt out?
Do I need to check local building code before taking out what seems to be a nonstructural base? Any thoughts on why it's there in the first place would be awesome!
