Making a sandstone retaining wall

I really want a sandstone retaining wall for my backyard and I want to make it myself. I wonder how thick a freestanding wall 30feet long and 7 feet tall of sandstone retaining wall making have to be, and what are the tools that I should get?

for the tools, it might be different depending on the stone being used. A pick axe will definitely be needed and reliable hammer. you may want to check out some videos online, there should be a tutorial or two there. best of luck on this project!

For the base thickness, you can go around 20 to 24 inches? As you go up you can always taper anyway. Height to thickness by rule of thumb for me is 1:4 ratio. For the shovel, I don't really think you need a lot, it's just a matter of how you use it. Best of luck!

You defo need to buy more, dont worry its an investment and just a one time use. They'll always come in handy thats for sure.

Agree with this! If you're staying as a mason for the next couple years, different kinds of shovel is actually going to help you get more clients (if commercial) and make the job better (if it's for your DIY).

For a wall that big, aim for about 18-24 inches thick at the base. Grab yourself a good mason's hammer, chisel, level, string line and if you can, a plate compactor makes life way easier. Can't wait to see how it comes together

Definitely 18–24" base thickness sounds right for a wall that size. For a 30-foot run, a plate compactor and solid tools like a mason's hammer and string line make a huge difference. Looking forward to seeing it come together.
