Rebuilding stone steps

Just moved into a place with a backyard that's got potential, but the stone steps are a total disaster! We were told that those were put in about 10 years ago over a pretty sketchy base, and now they've completely caved in.

I'm planning to rip out the old foundation and start fresh but I'm a bit stuck on the best method for rebuilding. Not sure what will be the best approach.

If you're starting from scratch, dig down below frost line and pour a concrete base with rebar for stability. Use mortar to set each stone, checking level and pitch for drainage. Let each layer cure before stacking more to avoid shifting. A mix of Portland cement, sand and masonry adhesive works well for bonding. Do you know what kind of stone you're working with?

Yeah, iIf you're starting fresh, make sure the base goes below the frost line and use compacted gravel for drainage. Are you thinking poured concrete or going back to stone? Also, check if local codes require rebar or footings, those can make a big difference long-term.

Tear them out, dig down to solid ground, and build a proper gravel base with compacted layers before you reset the stones. Good drainage and a solid foundation will keep them from sinking again
