Stacked rock wall project, need some tips

I'm in the middle of building a stacked rock wall, going for that dry stacked look without mortar. So far, I've got a solid gravel base, and I'm making sure the stones fit snugly, but I know there's always more to learn. anyone got tricks for keeping things sturdy, especially on uneven ground? also, what type of stone holds up best over time? appreciate any advice

@Stonecoldadrian I built a dry stacked wall last year. For uneven ground i suggest leveling the base with extra gravel. it helps a lot. For stones i used limestone. its strong and lasts long. make sure to pick flat ones for better stacking..

You're doing great with that compacted gravel base. Just make it like 4-6 inches deep and make sure it's levelled. The heaviest stones should go at the bottom. This is physics we're dealing with, it's not just art, it's not just masonry. Don't use round stones. It's always just gonna be granite, sandstone, or what. Then while you go farther, keep backfilling. That's essential if you want something beautiful and sturdy.

I see a lot of good replies coming from @TrustNo1 over here so props to him. Anyway, I do believe just take your time. You need PATIENCE really, not just stones. Always always check that all is aligned so you can avoid problems when you're almost done.
