proud to learn and improve skills for my little boy
In the vein of learning new skills to benefit your little boy...
I'm 73, daughter 46, son 43. One of my regrets is not releasing my son to try things on his own, i.e. saying (essentially) wait till I can get there & help. It can be a little risky so you'll have to judge what's age appropriate... what & when. Teach safety first. If you set an example of studying up on new skills and judging well what to diy & what to not diy, you'll be amazed how fast he'll match & exceed your skills.
ALSO, don't exclude daughters. They might even be more interested in working on cars than sons.
Boys or girls... working on projects can be great bonding time & common interests/goals can provide context to carry your relationship through their teens.
Best wishes, Eddie
