I hired this Sandstone Masonry for just.a quick fix on my chimney (it didn't need a full repair, just a minor one). Our agreed price was $1,500 after their estimate, so I paid half for the deposit. That involved just rebuilding from the roofline up and then doing acid wash then waterproofing. No agreed demolishing. But that's what they did! The entire chimney was gone when I got back so I confronted their worker and he said he wouldn't ruin his reputation just for a meager $1,500. I was pissed but I tried to remain cool and he was shouting right at me, all spit flying to my face. So the worker, let's call him M, was blabbering about he's going to rebuild it if I pay him $50k which I would not even have had to do if he didn't f'ing demolish! He said it's either that, or he's gonna give me back my deposit. He was filming me the whole time but I filmed him back and chased him away I could not stand it, my major depressive disorder couldn't stand it. So I went to the police but they said they couldn't help me, except they could call up the court for it but it's a lengthy process. The police just offered to call up M. Apparently, M is the son of the owner of the company. They apologized and gave back my deposit then fixed the chimney entirely for $12k. I was assured it was gonna be the best because they wanted to help me fix what they ruined, but then the fire department checked and said the chimney is unsafe. In the end I fixed it myself. It's such a waste. I didn't even get any paperwork and it was apparently illegal and undocumented they wouldn't pay taxes for it or whatever! This is just a reminder for you not to hire door-to-door contractors without credentials. They have to give their full paperwork and legal requirements before you start working with them. They also upsell and end up scamming you. So if something feels off, just... pull off immediately.
